What Is a VAT Calculator?
A VAT calculator is an online tool that performs common Value Added Tax (VAT) calculations. It can determine how much VAT should be added to a price, how much VAT is included in a gross price, or the net and gross values associated with a known VAT amount.
Our online VAT calculator supports three calculation modes:
Add VAT – Calculate VAT and the final price from an amount before VAT.
Remove VAT – Find the original net price and VAT included in an amount.
VAT Amount – Calculate the net and gross amounts when the VAT amount itself is known.
You can enter a custom VAT rate or quickly select 0%, 5%, 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 20%, or 25%.
Because VAT rates and rules vary by country and sometimes by the type of goods or services, you should use the rate that applies to your specific transaction.
How to Use the VAT Calculator
Using the VAT calculator online is straightforward, but the required amount changes depending on what you want to calculate.
Add VAT
Use Add VAT when you know the price before tax and want to calculate the VAT-inclusive price.
Select the Add VAT tab.
Enter the Amount Before VAT.
Enter your VAT Rate, or select one of the preset percentage buttons.
Click Calculate.
Review the net amount, VAT amount, and gross amount in the results.
For example, if you enter $1,200 with a 20% VAT rate, the calculator returns $240 in VAT and a gross amount of $1,440.
Remove VAT
Choose Remove VAT when the amount you have already includes VAT and you need to determine the original price before VAT.
Select Remove VAT.
Enter the Amount Including VAT.
Enter or select the applicable VAT Rate.
Click Calculate.
The result shows the amount before VAT, the VAT portion, and the original gross amount.
This calculation is particularly important because removing 20% VAT is not the same as simply subtracting 20% from the gross price.
VAT Amount
Use the VAT Amount option when you already know how much VAT was charged and want to derive the corresponding net and gross amounts.
Select the VAT Amount tab.
Enter the known VAT Amount.
Enter or select the VAT Rate.
Click Calculate.
Review the calculated net amount, VAT, and gross amount.
For all three modes, the Clear button resets the calculator so you can start a new VAT calculation.
How to Calculate VAT
The correct VAT calculation depends on whether you are adding VAT, removing VAT, or starting with a known VAT amount.
VAT Formula for Adding VAT
When you know the net price, calculate VAT using:
VAT Amount=Net Amount×100VAT Rate
Then calculate the gross amount:
Gross Amount=Net Amount+VAT Amount
You can also calculate the gross price directly:
Gross Amount=Net Amount×(1+100VAT Rate)
VAT Formula for Removing VAT
If a price already includes VAT, divide the gross amount by the VAT multiplier:
Net Amount=1+100VAT RateGross Amount
Then:
VAT Amount=Gross Amount−Net Amount
For example, a $1,200 gross amount at a 20% VAT rate gives:
Net Amount=1.201200=1000
So the VAT included in the $1,200 price is $200.
This demonstrates why subtracting 20% directly from $1,200 would be incorrect. Twenty percent was originally applied to the $1,000 net price, not to the $1,200 gross price.
Formula When the VAT Amount Is Known
If you already know the VAT amount:
Net Amount=VAT Rate/100VAT Amount
The gross amount is then:
Gross Amount=Net Amount+VAT Amount
For instance, a known VAT amount of $1,200 at 20% corresponds to a $6,000 net amount and a $7,200 gross amount.
Why Use an Online VAT Calculator?
VAT math is relatively simple when you have a net price and a straightforward rate. It becomes easier to make mistakes, however, when working backward from VAT-inclusive prices or handling many calculations.
A VAT online calculator helps you:
Add VAT to net prices quickly.
Extract VAT from tax-inclusive amounts correctly.
Calculate net and gross prices from a known VAT amount.
Compare calculations using different VAT rates.
Reduce manual arithmetic errors.
Get a clear net, VAT, and gross breakdown.
It can be especially convenient when checking invoices, preparing quotes, reviewing purchases, or working with VAT-inclusive pricing.
When and Where Is a VAT Calculator Useful?
A VAT calculator can be useful whenever prices need to be converted between VAT-exclusive and VAT-inclusive values.
Invoices and billing: Businesses and freelancers can check the VAT portion of invoices or calculate a VAT-inclusive total before billing.
Product pricing: Sellers can convert net prices into customer-facing gross prices where VAT-inclusive pricing is required.
Bookkeeping: Net, VAT, and gross figures can be separated when reviewing transaction records.
Purchasing: Buyers can determine how much VAT is contained in an advertised VAT-inclusive price.
Quotes and estimates: Businesses can calculate the final amount a customer may pay after the applicable VAT rate is added.
Cross-border comparisons: VAT calculations can help compare prices across markets, provided you first identify the correct VAT treatment and rate for the transaction.
Who Can Use This VAT Calculator?
The VAT calculator is useful for business owners, freelancers, accountants, bookkeepers, online sellers, purchasing teams, students, and consumers who need a quick VAT breakdown.
It can also help anyone asking how to calculate VAT without manually working through the formulas.
Keep in mind that the calculator performs the mathematical calculation. It does not determine whether VAT legally applies to a transaction, which VAT rate is required, or whether a business can reclaim VAT.
Common VAT Calculation Mistakes
Subtracting the VAT Percentage Directly From a Gross Price
One of the most common errors is assuming that removing 20% VAT means subtracting 20% from the VAT-inclusive price.
For a $120 gross price at 20% VAT, the net price is $100, not $96. The correct method is to divide $120 by 1.20.
Using the Wrong VAT Rate
VAT rates differ between jurisdictions, and some countries apply reduced or zero rates to qualifying goods and services. Always verify the rate applicable to the transaction rather than assuming a standard percentage.
Confusing Net and Gross Amounts
The net amount excludes VAT, while the gross amount includes it. Entering a gross price in the Add VAT mode would effectively add VAT to an amount that may already contain tax.
Confusing Zero-Rated and VAT-Exempt Transactions
A 0% VAT rate and a VAT exemption are not necessarily the same for tax purposes. Both may result in no VAT being charged to the customer, but their legal and reporting treatment can differ depending on the jurisdiction.
Treating the Calculator as Tax Advice
The VAT calculator determines amounts from the numbers and VAT rate you provide. Tax registration, exemptions, place-of-supply rules, VAT recovery, and filing obligations depend on the relevant tax laws.
Tips for More Reliable VAT Calculations
The mathematical result depends on the information you enter. For more reliable calculations, first determine whether your starting amount is before VAT, including VAT, or the VAT amount itself.
Then confirm the correct VAT percentage from the relevant tax authority, particularly for reduced-rate, zero-rated, exempt, or cross-border transactions.
For invoices and accounting records, also follow the rounding method and reporting requirements that apply in your jurisdiction. Small differences can occur when VAT is rounded per item rather than on an invoice total.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I calculate VAT?
To calculate VAT from a net amount, multiply the net price by the VAT rate divided by 100. At a 20% rate, $100 × 20/100 gives $20 VAT, making the VAT-inclusive price $120.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by (1+VAT rate/100). For 20% VAT, multiply the net price by 1.20.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by (1+100VAT Rate). At 20%, divide the gross amount by 1.20. Subtract the resulting net amount from the gross amount to find the VAT portion.
What is the VAT formula?
For a price before VAT, the basic VAT formula is:
VAT=Net Amount×100VAT Rate
The formula changes when VAT needs to be extracted from a price that already includes tax.
What is the difference between net and gross price?
A net price is the amount before VAT. A gross price is the total after VAT has been added.
Can I enter my own VAT rate?
Yes. The vat calculator provides preset rates of 0%, 5%, 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 20%, and 25%, while the VAT Rate field allows you to enter the rate needed for your calculation.
Is VAT the same in every country?
No. VAT rates, reduced rates, exemptions, registration requirements, and tax rules vary by jurisdiction. Some countries also use differently named consumption taxes rather than VAT. Check the appropriate tax authority when determining the rate for an actual transaction.
Can this vat calculator tell me which VAT rate I should charge?
No. The calculator calculates VAT using the percentage you enter or select. Determining which rate legally applies depends on factors such as the country, type of goods or services, customer, and transaction.
